PondBrite

PondBrite is a powerful, copper-based bactericide and algaecide for domestic use in small water bodies. It targets cyanobacteria, algae, and harmful bacteria in ponds, lagoons, reservoirs, fountains, and decorative water features.

At recommended rates, PondBrite disperses evenly, remains in solution, and controls microorganisms effectively at low copper concentrations.

It is safe for fish and aquatic life when used with proper dosage and care.

Key Features & Application Guidelines
  • Uniform dispersion throughout the water column — does not precipitate.

  • Most effective at 0.5 ppm copper concentration for bactericidal and algaecidal action.

  • Apply in late spring or early summer when algae first appear.

  • Effective in both warm and cold temperatures.

  • Application rates vary based on algae density, water hardness, turbidity, and flow conditions.

  • If unsure of dosage, start low and increase gradually until control is achieved or the maximum allowable copper level is reached.

  • For best results, apply on sunny days when filamentous algae mats are floating and can be treated directly.

  • Physically remove large algae mats before application to enhance performance.

  • Regularly monitor ionic copper levels to maintain safe residuals.

  • When treating water with fish, do not exceed 0.4 ppm copper in the total water body.

  • Begin treatment along shorelines, moving outward in bands to allow fish to migrate to untreated areas

How It Works

Safe Use in Fish Habitats

Before using PondBrite in water with fish, check the water’s alkalinity (should be above 50 ppm), pH (6.5 or higher), and organic content. Low alkalinity or pH can increase copper toxicity, which may harm sensitive fish like trout or salmon.

Because copper’s effect varies with many factors like fish species, water temperature, and chemistry, it’s important to apply PondBrite carefully:

  • Use smaller doses over a few days for sensitive fish.

  • Monitor copper levels regularly to keep them safe (below 0.4 ppm).

  • Apply PondBrite near algae growth, usually on the water surface or shallow areas.

  • Start treating near the shore so fish can move away.

Controlling Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria)

Blue-green algae produce harmful toxins called microcystins, which are released when algae die. To keep toxins low:

  • Treat algae early in the season before blooms get large.

  • Use low doses of PondBrite to control algae while protecting helpful bacteria that break down toxins naturally.

  • Maintain a small level of copper (0.3 ppm) in the water to prevent future blooms.

If you suspect or confirm blue-green algae (cyanobacteria), follow the instructions on the product label. If you are unsure, contact your Ocion distributor. These organisms can be dangerous and may require special handling and guidance.

Safety Tips

  • After treating a full algae bloom, wait 48 hours before swimming, fishing, or using the water.

  • Keep people and animals away during this time to avoid exposure to released toxins.

  • Regularly test toxin levels if there’s a risk to ensure the water is safe.

Environmental Responsibility

PondBrite is designed to control algae and bacteria effectively while protecting aquatic life and water quality. When used as directed, it supports balanced treatment with minimal environmental impact.

Treating algae can temporarily lower oxygen levels as dead algae decompose. This can stress or harm fish if not managed properly.

To reduce risk:

  • Treat ¼–⅓ of the water body at a time, starting along the shore and moving outward.

  • Wait at least 2 days between treatments to allow fish to move and oxygen to recover.

  • Use aeration if available, and allow 14 days between full treatments.

  • Apply PondBrite early in the bloom season at the lowest effective copper rate. For persistent algae, increase gradually but do not exceed 1.0 ppm ionic copper.

  • Copper binds to organic matter, so its toxicity naturally decreases as it moves through the water.

By following these practices, PondBrite provides safe, responsible algae control for ponds, fountains, and other small aquatic systems.
